A Waste-To-Energy Power Plant with CO2 Sequestration

چکیده
This paper assesses the technical and economic feasibility of a novel idea: Reducing the emission of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas contributing to global warming, by combusting solid wastes with industrial oxygen mixed with recirculated flue gas. The process gas, consisting mosdy of carbon dioxide, would be compressed and used in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) projects. By using municipal and other organic wastes that are currendy landfilled as a fuel and sequestering the carbon dioxide product of combustion underground, such a process would provide the maximum environmental advantages possible, by producing electricity renewably without emitting greenhouse gases. The results of this preliminary analysis indicate that this may be a good opportunity to reduce carbon emissions at a lower cost than other methods of carbon sequestration.

Conceptual design of a super-critical CO2 brayton cycle based on stack waste heat recovery for shazand power plant in Iran
Conceptual design of a waste heat recovery cycle is carried out in attempt to enhance the thermal efficiency of a steam power plant. In the recovery system, super-critical an CO2 is employed as the working fluid operating in a Brayton cycle. Low grade heat rejected by the flue gases through the stack is used as the primary heat source, while a secondary heat exchanger utilizes th...

Fossil fuels are still widely used for power generation. Nevertheless, it is possible to attain a shortand medium-term substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere through a sequestration of the CO2 produced in fuels’ oxidation. The chemical-looping combustion (CLC) technique is based on a chemical intermediate agent, which gets oxidized in an air reactor and is then cond...
متن کاملCapturing and Sequestering CO2 from a Coal-fired Power Plant - Assessing the Net Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
It is technically feasible to capture CO2 from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant and various researchers are working to understand the fate of sequestered CO2 and its long term environmental effects. Sequestering CO2 significantly reduces the CO2 emissions from the power plant itself, but this is not the total picture. CO2 capture and sequestration consumes additional energy, thus loweri...
متن کاملEvaluation of the impact of CO2, aqueous fluid, and reservoir rock interactions on the geologic sequestration of CO2, with special emphasis on economic implications
Lowering the costs of front-end processes in the geologic sequestration of CO2 can dramatically lower the overall costs. One approach is to sequester less-pure CO2 waste streams that are less expensive or require less energy to separate from flue gas, a coal gasification process, etc. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impacts of an impure CO2 waste stream on geologic sequestrati...
متن کاملEnergy Recovery from Waste Incineration—The Importance of Technology Data and System Boundaries on CO2 Emissions
Previous studies on waste incineration as part of the energy system show that waste management and energy supply are highly dependent on each other, and that the preconditions for the energy system setup affects the avoided emissions and thereby even sometimes the total outcome of an environmental assessment. However, it has not been previously shown explicitly which key parameters are most cru...
متن کاملFossil Fuels without Co2 Emissions: Assessing the Costs of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Sequestration in Us Electricity Markets
The decoupling of fossil-fueled electricity production from atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions via CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) is increasingly regarded as an important means of mitigating climate change at a reasonable cost. Engineering analyses of CO2 mitigation typically compare the cost of electricity for a base generation technology to that from a similar plant with CO2 capture an...
